Kalewala: Tale of Sampo boardgame

A small take of all the cards in the game, and their board pieces. I illustrated the icons, frame decorations and did the layout. The artwork is both common use from National Gallery of Finland (Akseli Gallen-Kallela) and Nicolai Kochergin's art purchased from fineArtImages from Beligum (2022).
Original printed and lasercut plywood game pieces: player magnets, trap magnets (x-shapes) and Boat and Sampo tokens, as well as Tuonela deck indicator (tree on black background). The Sampo churns fortune in the original Kalevala, and in the end is broken in pieces and sinks in the sea.
The booklets "Learn to Play and Teach", "World of Kalewala" and "The Rule book". The first one is not in the purchaseable game, as it was integrated to the other two booklets.

The World of Kalewala explores the history and meaning of Kalevala epoch, including an important point of view from Karelian spokeperson Tuomo Kondie, of the Dark side of Kalevala's history, written both in Karelian and English! We as a team think this point of view is very important, as when Kalevala was constructed from sung poems around Karelian, Viena and Inkeri lands, no recognition was done to the indigenous people.
Vapriikki museum center in Tampere, Finland, held a Pelien Kalevala ("Kalevala of Games") exhibit in turn of the year 2019-2020 (pre-covid) and our game was one of the only board games there. Photos with black background are under copyright of Teppo Moilanen from Vapriikki image archives.
The board is magnetic so that it can stand between players. The board folds in three, and has quick playing turn guides and instructions on both sides. These game pieces in the photos are printed and laser cut plywood with magnetic sticker in the back.
